Jesus and his disciples returned to his home town of Nazareth. He spoke the synagogues there just as He had in other towns where the people were awed, but the people here were offended and scoffed, "He's just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us."
Jesus told the disciples this, "A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family."
As we share our faith in Christ we should not be surprised that there will be people who reject the truth and are offended by it. This is especially the case with our own family members when we try to share Christ with them.
Shortly after this Jesus sent His disciples out doing ministry two-by-two with these instructions, "If any place refuses to welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust from your feet as you leave to show that you have abandoned those people to their fate."
Followers of Christ desire so much to see people respond positively to the message of Jesus. There will be some who respond and receive Christ, but there will be many who do not.
Remember what Dr. Bright said, “Successful witnessing is sharing Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit and leaving the results to God.”
We cannot force ministry to happen. We can only join God where He is at work.
Bill Bright stated many times, "More will happen in a single moment through a divine movement of God's Spirit than through decades of human effort."
Visualize this illustration that he told me, “Joining God where He is at work is like standing beside railroad tracks and lassoing the smokestack of a locomotive." All we have to do when this happens is just hold on.
Let's not become discouraged by an apparent failure in our witnessing or what may seem to be our personal lack of success in ministry. God sees the bigger picture and all ministry falls within his Master Plan.
Those that God has drawn to respond will do so. That means our witnessing is like fishing in a stocked pond! We know we will be catching something.
